The Empty Cup from Which I Cannot Pour

Acrylic on oil on canvas
28 x 35 cm
2022

The idea of this piece comes from the saying "You can't pour from an empty cup." The meaning of the saying is we cannot care for others if we don't also care for ourselves. Sometimes it feels like energy is being sucked out of me even when I think that I have nothing left to give. A straw for each member of the family, I chose to paint an empty glass from my parents' house, also referencing to picked flowers in a vase. This acrylic painting was done on top of an oil painting of a sunset I created in my childhood.

The painting is from a photo of my parents sitting at home. My mother sat on a red chair with cucumber slices on her eyes. My father is smiling from his office in the back. It's about my childhood issues and learning forgiveness.
